Dr. João Eustachio is an economist, researcher, and educator dedicated to advancing sustainable development through both research and practical training. He currently heads the Sustainable Developmental Research and Practice Unit at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg), where he combines his expertise in project management, network coordination, and applied research to support the next generation of scholars and practitioners.

His academic journey began at the Universidade de São Paulo, where he completed his doctoral studies and continues to be active as a researcher in the Department of Administration. Over the years, his work has evolved into a multidisciplinary focus spanning corporate social responsibility (CSR), sustainability leadership, education for sustainable development, and sustainability policy — always with an eye toward bridging the gap between rigorous academic research and real-world impact.

João's contributions to the field are reflected in a substantial body of published work: over 55 academic publications and more than 1,900 citations, covering topics ranging from sustainable supply chains and climate resilience to health education and institutional sustainability governance. His research has been featured in respected journals and edited volumes, including contributions to Springer Nature's World Sustainability Series and the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education.

Beyond his own research, João plays an active role in shaping international academic collaboration. He serves as Executive Director of the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) and the European North American Sustainability Research Consortium, and holds the position of Vice-Chair of the Board at the Baltic University Programme (BUP) — a network connecting universities across the Baltic Sea region in pursuit of sustainable development goals. He is also frequently invited as a keynote speaker at international conferences, most recently addressing the theme of sustainability leadership in higher education institutions.

What sets João apart as an educator is his ability to translate deep academic expertise into practical, accessible guidance. Having navigated the full journey of academic publishing himself — from structuring a first manuscript to responding to peer reviewers to seeing his work cited nearly two thousand times — he understands firsthand the challenges researchers face when trying to communicate their ideas clearly and effectively.

Through hands-on workshops and individualized coaching, João helps researchers — from early-career PhD students to experienced academics — develop the clarity, structure, and confidence needed to turn complex research into compelling, publishable writing.
